“And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known, I will guide them.” Isaiah 42:16
God created us to be dependent upon him for guidance in every area of life. Yes, every area. So that means our friendships, our wants, our desires, our future, and everything else under the sun. Every area means every area.
We like it that God is our Guide but we don’t want His guidance in every area of life. We’d rather that he were “on call” so to speak. Instead of a Genie in a bottle we want Him to be a “Guide in a bottle”. When we call, we want Him to come running. Otherwise, we’d prefer He allow us to go our own way. We think we know the way and what’s best for us. Trouble is, we don’t. Worst of all, we get lost without even knowing it. When we stray from God and His guidance we wander into great danger.
Psalm 119 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word…Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” We need to ask God to guide us and lead us. We need to ask him to show us the way. Each one of us must acknowledge our weakness and need for His guidance. The Lord Jesus is our Good Shepherd. He loves His sheep and calls us each by name. When we wander away from Him, He runs after us to guide us back to safety and rest in Him.
With God as our guide we have no reason to fear. As Psalm 23 reminds us, we are protected and comforted by the Lord even as we walk through the valley of deep darkness. Ultimately He will guide us into the gates of heaven, to life eternal with Him. Come, Lord Jesus, Come. Help me to follow you.
