For even the Son on Man did no come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
As women we love to talk about love, don’t we? My daughters are obsessed with all the princess fairy tales that end with the valiant, handsome prince/knight in shining armor riding in on a horse to rescue and marry the beautiful princess. Frankly, I love those stories too. It is comforting to believe that ultimately there is a happy ending to the story we all want for our lives.
But unfortunately, the way the story goes, we learn that love is about someone else seeking us out, serving us, sacrificing for us and ultimately filling up our unfulfilled hearts with their acceptance of us. And so we wait, and assume that life will work that way. We look to another human (perhaps our parents, friends, a boyfriend) to GIVE to us, to ultimately fill the desire of our hearts to be loved. Of course the love of other people in our lives is a wonderful blessing, but instead of enjoying the gift of those relationships we look to them (him/her) to fill us up.
But God, in His Word, not only tells us, but shows us, what true love really is…Love GIVES (For God so loved the world he GAVE). Love SERVES (for even the Son of Man did not come to BE SERVED but to SERVE and to GIVE his life as a ransom for many). Love SACRIFICES (greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends).
The reason we love the fairy tales and romantic comedies is because we WERE created for a great romance….the perfect, filling love of a beautiful Savior who gave, served and sacrificed because he would rather die than live without us (better than any knight in shining armor I have met). To the degree we see Jesus as our True Prince giving HIS life for us, to the degree we are filled with HIS perfect love, to that degree we will be able to move out into our relationships (parents, friends, boys) and give, serve and sacrifice for them (instead of use, need and take from them).
Jesus, you are the True love of my life that I was created for. Help me today to be so filled with and content in your love that I can enjoy the relationships you have given me, that I can love those around me well. In your name I pray, Amen.
