“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21
Think about the day you bought your first Ipod or cell phone. In the days leading up to the purchase you probably thought about little else. When you got it you treasured it. You probably bought some kind of case and spent the next few days wiping the screen constantly while showing it to your friends.
If you have a cell phone, Ipod, laptop, etc. you probably are familiar with the term “bricking.” This term refers to a situation that happens when you go to turn on your device and it completely fails you. In other words, it is dead as a brick. These moments are devastating because the thing we once treasured in our hearts has completely failed us. We’re again reminded that nothing lasts forever.
However, in this verse Jesus tells us that something DOES last forever.
So often we think that physical possessions will save us and bring us life and fulfillment. When Jesus says, “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” he does not mean you have to make bank deposits in heaven. Verse 21 gives us insight into what Jesus is speaking about.
It reads, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This means that Jesus wants Christians to find their life and fulfillment in God instead of stuff. Batteries fail, screens go dark, and metal rusts but the Kingdom of God never fails. What do you find your heart getting most excited about? A new ipod? Or the unfailing love and acceptance of Jesus?
