Kindness

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32

The first year that we were living in Dallas, our new friends, the Purcells, invited us to a Christmas Party in their home. We were thrilled to get such a gracious invitation. We loved the Purcells and knew that they threw the best parties. We looked forward to their party for weeks.

We arrived shortly after the party had started and immediately were treated like the guests of honor. The Purcells introduced us to all of their closest friends and family. They spoiled us with tasty food, drink and assorted treats. We enjoyed every minute of our time together with them at the party. None of us wanted to leave.

When we got into our car to go home, we were all overwhelmed by the kindness that had been shown to us. They made us feel so special—like we were royalty. With their closest friends and family surrounding them, the Purcells went out of their way to make us feel special. We will never forget the kindness that was shown to us that evening.

God’s kindness leads us to repentance. God’s kindness brings us to faith in Christ. God’s kindness is always undeserved. Because of His kindness, He has provided a way for us to be with Him for all eternity.

In Ephesians 2 Paul says: “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, it is because of your kindness that we can have eternal life. Thank you for showing kindness to me. I know that it is not something I deserve. Forgive me for not being kind and help me to be kind to those around me.
