Fullfilling the Message

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” Hebrews 1:1-2

I still remember the first time I went to Disney World. For months my parents had been showing me pictures and telling me how great Disney World was going to be. From everything they had told me I knew it was going to be great but nothing compared to actually seeing the real thing. It was bigger and better than I could ever have imagined! Suddenly, everything my parents had previously told me snapped into sharper focus.

In this passage, the writer of Hebrews is showing us how Jesus makes the entire Old Testament snap into sharper focus. Often, people think the Bible is just a random collection of stories and moral advice but it is actually the story of Jesus from cover to cover. These verses point directly to that.

In the Old Testament, God spoke to His people in a variety of ways but the prophets are specifically mentioned. Their job was to say, “Someone is coming! Turn back to God!” Now, the writer of Hebrews tells us that God has spoken to us most clearly through Jesus.

We have the benefit of being able to hold the Bible in our hands and see how Christ fulfilled the message of the Old Testament prophets. Now, the message is: “Someone has come and He’s coming again to rescue you!”

Isn’t it amazing to think that God wants us to know who He is? What’s even more amazing is the thought that God sent His Son to rescue us from our sin and brokenness.

And if that wasn’t enough, He gave us the Bible and the Holy Spirit to help us continue to see Him and get ready for Jesus’ return. How does this change the way you see the Bible you already have?
