“Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self control.” 1 Timothy 2:9
Typically when I talk to girls about the subject of modesty, they immediately get defensive and assume I am going to give them a long list of what they cannot wear. Rest assured, that is not the case! I believe that modesty is more about the heart than it is the wardrobe.
So instead of looking at your closet, I want you to examine your heart. Ask yourself some key questions.
Take a few minutes and HONESTLY ANSWER those questions. I’ll wait…
If you were sincere with your answers, you won’t need a wardrobe checklist. The motives of your heart are far more convicting than any list I could give you.
Now, for some of you, this sounds completely crazy. Discussing modesty might make you feel uncomfortable. Maybe you haven’t even thought twice about it. Maybe you have never realized that men are wired VISUALLY. (By the way, they aren’t crude. They are simply male. God created them that way!)
I strongly encourage you to look up the “Modesty Survey” by Alex and Brett Harris. These two brothers surveyed over 1600 guys that submitted over 150,000 answers regarding the way girls dress. I think their answers might surprise you.
There are three powerful words I remind my daughters. You might want to write these down with a Sharpie marker on your hand. Ready? Don’t ever forget it. MODEST IS HOTTEST.
All joking aside, “Our beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” (I Peter 3:4)
Did you catch that? GREAT WORTH IN GOD’S SIGHT! Also, Paul exhorts us “that whatever we do, we should do all for the glory of God.” (I Corinthians 10:31) And like it or not, that includes how we dress.
