“In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them, and they will be passed on. But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.“ Psalm 102: 25-27
As I write this, my neighbor’s tree is shedding its leaves. Every time the wind blows, hundreds of yellow leaves fall towards the grown, fall’s version of a snow storm. And as fall gives way to winter and the days grow shorter and darker, I find myself thankful for the truth in United Pursuit’s song “Seasons Change” which is frequently stuck in my mind these days: “Though the seasons change, your love remains.”
As the physical seasons change, I’m always reminded of how God shows His beauty and goodness in each season in the earth: Summer celebrates easiness, fun, and all things going well; Fall reminds us to slow down, cultivate gratitude, and celebrate the bounty of God’s goodness; Winter, in its quiet beauty, reminds us to rest and remember beauty can be found even when things look dead; and Spring reminds us of redemption and new life.
And as our physical seasons change, so do our life seasons. You might be in a period of new life, joy, excitement, and dreaming; on the other hand, things might feel slow, broken, dreams might feel dead. And the truth is that our life ebbs and flows, the good mixing with the bad, the joyous mixing with the hard. There is so much we navigate as we journey through the world, and more than anything, I’m so thankful that I don’t have to weather the changes of my life alone. No matter where I am or how things end, God is with me in it all. He is a good and steady God.
God is the same good God He was back in the Bible. He’s the same good God He was yesterday, and He will be the same good God He is today every day into our future.
We can trust His steadiness, His loving hand in our lives. Psalm 139:13 reminds us that God has known and cared for us since we were growing in our mother’s womb. Deuteronomy 31:6 promises us that even in hard and scary times “the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you.” James 1:17 reminds us “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, with whom there is no variation or changing or shadow of turning.”
God does not leave you, forsake you, or change His mind about you. No matter the season you’re in, He guides you with his steady hand. He remains who He has always been for you: you Loving Father, your Protector, your Shepherd, your Peace.
