“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
Do you ever consider how blessed you are? Do you ever look around at all you have been given and wonder why you have so much?
Webster’s dictionary states that a blessing is “something promoting or contributing to happiness or prosperity; approval; encouragement.” As a child, I remember my grandmother teaching me the song, “Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your many blessings, see what God has done.”
God stays the same, no matter how we act, think, or respond to situations. He loves us no matter what and blesses us based on that love. He gives to us because Jesus fills in the gaps where we fall short – because of Jesus, God approves of us, and we are presented as blameless.
He doesn’t change based on the way we respond. He wants to promote us and contribute to our happiness on Earth – He wants us to experience and enjoy the things He has created because He is a loving Father.
However, He is more concerned with our eternal happiness than our temporary happiness. This is the ultimate blessing. Even though He has already given us the greatest, eternal blessing in Jesus, He still gives us relationships, opportunities, and even material things that bring us joy. Even though He gives us things on Earth, all that He does points us to Jesus and heaven.
These gifts help us to see God and know more about God’s unconditional love for us if our hearts are in the right place. It is important for us to acknowledge God in this process and thank Him for the good and perfect gifts that He sends from above.
It is important for us to find humility in the midst of this process as well, realizing that we would not have anything without God. He does not have to bless us with the little things because He has already blessed us with Jesus, and our works and intentions do not add to this process.
It is all God. The right response in truly receiving God’s blessings is to thank Him and use the blessings for Him.
Take Away: Make a list of the blessings in your life. Take time to thank God for all He has done for you. Make a related list on how you could use each blessing to glorify Him.
