God's Masterpiece

“What is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Psalm 8:4

“Do I even matter? Does my life mean anything? Why would God love someone like me? Why would God even care?” Do you ever ask questions like this? Do you ever wonder if your life matters or God really cares about you? David did.

In Psalm 8 David asked God one of the greatest questions anyone has ever asked: “What is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you care for him?” Essentially David asks God why in the world He would care about us.

Life is hard and we are used to people overlooking us. We are used to people treating us poorly. We all know that it’s up to us to give people a reason to care about us. Unless we have some great skill, talent, ability or gift to offer the world then no one seems to notice us or care. It seems like the world only celebrates celebrity types. If you are beautiful, athletic, intelligent, wealthy, or well connected then the world says you matter. If not, the world tends to communicate that you don’t matter or at least not that much. The Bible says something altogether different.

I love gear and I love name brands. Several years ago a friend of mine provided me with the opportunity (gave me a discount) to purchase some more gear—an Arc’tyrex Shell (rain jacket) to be exact. I love my Arc’tyrex jacket. I’ve worn it in all kinds of weather. I’ve snow skied in it, golfed in it, fished it—you name it. My jacket never lets me down no matter how bad the weather is. I love my jacket because it always does the job it was built to do.

Why is my jacket such a great jacket? Why is it so valuable? It’s not really because it does such a great job but rather because it was made with great care. The label on my jacket points to the maker of my jacket. “Arc’teryx proudly guarantees the quality and performance of all our products.”

When David asks God: Why do you care about us? Why do you value us? Why do we matter? David finds the answer in bold print in God’s Word. God essentially says: “Because I made you!”

Psalm 8 tells us that God has made us “a little lower than Himself and crowned us with glory and honor.” God doesn’t make junk or worthless creatures. All that God made is good except for mankind. Mankind is very good! God stands by His creation. He has made us in His image after His very own likeness. Next time someone asks you whether her life matters, you can respond: “Absolutely! God made you in His image and crowned you with glory and honor.”
