Who God Is
“For a child has been born for us, a son has been given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, And there shall be endless peace.” Isaiah 9:6-7
So often I see this verse around Christmas time, but here in the middle of August, I open my Bible to this verse and it moves me. So much so, that below I’m sharing my prayer, the words that poured out of me after reading and reflecting on this passage. My hope is that these verses move you to pray your own prayers of thanksgiving, and the praise below reminds you of some of the ways God is moving in your own life:
Thank you God that you are the Wonderful Counselor. Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who intercedes on our behalf (Romans 8:26-27). Thank you that if I seek, and knock, and ask, you will answer (Matthew 7:7). Thank you for the way you impart wisdom and discernment. Thank you for counseling me.
Thank you God that you are the Mighty God. You are mighty to save. Thank you that you are with me, that you take great delight in me, that you quiet me with your love and rejoice over me with loud singing (Zephaniah 3:17). Thank you that under your wings I find refuge (Psalm 91:4). You are my shield and my fortress (Psalm 18:2). You fight my battles for me (Exodus 14:14). Truly, you are mighty.
Thank you God that you are the Everlasting Father. Thank you that you called us out into adoption and knit us into your family long before we even asked to be a part (Ephesians 5:1). Thank you that you are our Abba, a near, loving Father, not a harsh, distant one. Thank you that you sent your son Jesus to die on the cross in order for us to really know you and understand your heart. Thank you for loving the world so much that you would do this (John 3:16). Thank you that from everlasting to everlasting you remain (Psalm 90:2), and that your love endures forever and ever, amen (Psalm 136:1).
Thank you Jesus that you are the Prince of Peace, that you bring peace to those who are near and peace to those who are far off (Ephesians 2:17). Thank you Lord that you came so differently than we expected you to, and thank you for the fact that you are coming again in victory and glory (Revelation 1:7-8). Thank you that in your death you brought peace to the world, peace between us and God, and peace to our own hearts and minds. Thank you that you yourself are our peace (Ephesians 2:14).
Thank you God for the fact that your word is lodged deeply into our hearts and minds. Help us to walk today as true daughters and sons who know their Wonderful Counselor, who trust deeply in their Mighty God, who are loved by their Everlasting Father, and who rest securely in their Prince of Peace. Lead us today in your love, Lord. It’s in your name we pray, Amen.
