Christ, Our Sure Foundation

“I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:1-2

All throughout scripture, the metaphor of a rock is used to represent God and His Word. God is the surest place we can place our trust, the best place we can set up our life.

The world would love to tell us our security can be found in money, another person, or our own abilities, but all of those things will one day fail. God is our one, sure foundation, and David knew that well. In Psalm 18:1-2 David repeats the phrase “God is my rock” twice, reinforcing how deeply he holds to this truth. For David, God was the place he put his trust. In the same two verses, David declares:

The Lord as his strength

The Lord as his rock

The Lord as his fortress

The Lord as his deliverer

The Lord as his refuge

The Lord as his shield

The Lord as his salvation

The Lord as his stronghold

That is a lot of declaration of who God is! These words are strong, supportive, and protective, and give us a great picture of who God is.

He is there for us when we feel weak in our bodies or spirits; He protects and delivers and shields us from the hardships we face; He is our refuge, the place we find true rest; and He is our salvation.

God saves and redeems us because of His great love and grace, and all we have to do in return is anchor ourselves to him. Like in Matthew 7, the person who built his house upon the rock was able to withstand a terrible storm, the same is true for us: by building our lives upon the Rock, we are able to withstand the storms of life, knowing that God has protected and led us this far, and He is good and able to do it again.
