Come Thou Fount
“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation” Romans 5:10–11
I think Hymns are beautiful, there is something just magical about listening to the words and reflecting on the story behind those words.
I have to say my favorite Hymn is “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by Robert Robinson. There is something in the rhythm of the verses tied with the words of the verses that just really resonates.
If you do a little research on the life of Robert Robinson, you can see he can be a pretty relatable guy, even though he lived during the 1700’s. When Robert was 14 years old his mother sent him off to London for an apprenticeship with a barber because he was getting into some trouble. Even in London he got into trouble with drinking and gambling. Then one night he want to an evangelistic meeting, thinking he would make fun of the people there and the message they were sharing, but rather the sermon made a significant impact on Robert and three years later, he gave his life to Christ and entered into ministry.
Later on, as he was preparing for a sermon, Robert wrote “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” My favorite verse in the hymn is the second chorus:
“Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I’m come; and I hope by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood”
What an incredible picture this is of the love that Christ has shown us, interposing His precious blood so that we may have a full life in Him. When I am truly honest with myself, there have been times when I have wandered from God, we, like sheep, have this tendency, even though we know it is not good for us, to wander from the protection of our shepherd.
But rather than letting us wander away, Jesus continues to seek us, even when we are turned from Him. He seeks us when we are lost and brings us safely back to Him – what a comforting thing to hear! He seeks us when we are lost and brings us safely home.
No matter how far you wander, how lost you may feel, Jesus is still seeking you out – turn to Him, rest in His protection and find comfort in His love.
For me I know there are certain places where I feel closest to God: camp, the beach, and at sunrise and sunset, but when I am not in the places I can find myself wandering, letting other things, like work, reputation, and worry become the center of my focus – and to be honest that can be super discouraging when I realize what is happening.
But quickly I am reminded that a wandering life is not the only life I am tied to. No, in fact we have a Savior who is chasing us down and calling us home. And as I turn, bringing my attention on Christ, I realize how safe I am.
