What Will Make Me Whole?
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I love; in your name I will lift up my hands.” Psalm 63:1-4
One of my favorite parts of college ministry is watching our students get married. My husband and I have the privilege of doing pre-marital counseling for a lot of these students and they often ask us what we wish we had known before we got married.
We tell them, “You will wake up the morning after your wedding and realize that you still need Jesus. As life-changing and wonderful as it is to find someone to spend the rest of your life with, your spouse will never be able to fill your deepest longings. Only Jesus can accomplish this in your heart.”
David also understood that his deepest longing could only be met in God’s presence. Psalm 63 says David’s whole being longed for God. David was in a literal desert and despite unimaginable physical thirst; David knew that God’s love was better than water and even life itself.
A relationship with God the Father is the only thing that will satisfy our deepest need – both in this life and beyond. Marriage, nor friendship, food, social status, or the approval of others can quench the thirst of your soul.
Spiritual wholeness only comes from God, the One who made you. He is the one who sustains you in all circumstances. May we lift our hands to him and may his praise always be upon our lips.
