“But the fruit of the Spirit is love […]” Galatians 5:22
One of my favorite songs is “More Like Love” by Ben Rector, and I often find myself singing it on days when I find myself falling short, where the love in my heart seems to run thin. I want to daily walk in the fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Because I walk with God, I do have these characteristics ready and available in me, but how often do I let pride, anger, fear, worry, impatience, ugliness, doubt, sin, and impulsiveness get in the way? May more often than I want.
That’s one reason why I’m so thankful for the Spirit of God. When we follow Jesus, we are given His Spirit who gently corrects us as we sin and turns our hearts back to Jesus.
Romans 8:26 says that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness,” and when we feel unable to muster up the love, patience, or kindness we want to give others, He is able to help us do so. We can rejoice in our weaknesses (2 Corinthians 2:19), because where we are weak, God is mighty in us.
If you need a reminder to rely on the fruit of the Spirit today, I hope these lyrics stick in your heart and mind, and that you interact with the people in your world today, looking a little more like love, thanks to His help.
“I used to think I wanted to be famous, I’d be recognized out in a crowd. But the funny thing is every time I’ve gotten what I want it lets me down.
I used to think I needed all the answers. I used to need to know that I was right. I used to be afraid of things I couldn’t cover up in black and white.
But now I just wanna look more like love. I just wanna look more like love. This whole world is spinning crazy; I can’t quite keep up. So one thing around here that we don’t have quite enough of. So I just wanna look a little more like love”
