“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” - Matthew 5:13
Are you salty? Not the new definition of the word meaning annoyed or upset, but the Biblical definition, meaning filled with God!
In Matthew 5 (Jesus’s sermon on the mount), Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth. Salt can be used for a variety of things, but most often it’s used to flavor and enhance our food.
In the same way, as followers of Jesus, we are able to change or “flavor” the culture around us with the love of God. When it’s clear we love God, love flows out of us and impacts those around us. People see that we have something different than what culture offers them: we have peace, joy, humility, contentment, kindness, and more.
But what happens if we lose our saltiness? While real salt can never actually lose its saltiness, it’s easy for us to lose what we have built up in God and find ourselves acting just like everyone else around us. When that happens, we’ve lost our purpose of bringing Christ’s love into the world and find ourselves drifting along like everyone else in the world.
Yet there is hope for us if we feel like we’re lacking in our closeness to God. Because of Jesus’s death on the cross, we have endless opportunities to turn towards God again, to draw close and be refreshed by His presence so we can go out and bring His goodness to the world.
There’s no pressure to be perfect, because Jesus has already made the perfect sacrifice. When we feel like we’ve drifted away, we can always pick ourselves back up and begin again. Be encouraged today that you have God going with you and equipping you to bring His flavor and light to the world around you!
