Be Present Today
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24
For my birthday one of my friends gave me a picture that says “Today is going to be the best day ever” and I have it hung right beside my door so that each day I leave my apartment I can be reminded. Many people have heard this verse read over and over and probably have it memorized, but there is one word that really sticks out to me as I read this verse and it is the word “in”.
The Bible does not say “let us rejoice and be glad FOR it” it says “in”. To me, that is a reminder that each day we are called to be present.
There are so many things that can distract us from being present: cellphones, social media, homework, stress, sports, or even friends. These things are not bad, but what this verse is reminding us of is that these things should not distract us from living present in each day, giving our attention to the Lord and even to those around us. The Gospels tell us the story of Jesus washing the feet of His disciples (if you have time go back and read John 13:1-17).
Before Passover and before going to the cross Jesus takes the time to wash each of His disciples’ feet, an incredible example of being present. Jesus was about to be arrested, taken away from the world and killed by the people He came to save. Instead of being distracted and consumed by this He chose to serve His disciples and be with them.
The Lord does not tell us to praise Him for the day, He calls us to be glad in each day, rejoicing in the day He has made. As you go into today how can you be more present?
