We Are Here to Serve

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:26-28

I was not a helpful daughter or neighbor when I was growing up. I resented every chore. Anger welled up within me with every weed I had to pull or dishwasher I had to empty. Why did I have to do so many chores? Why couldn’t I just watch television or talk on the phone with my friends?

What if I had taken on Jesus’ attitude instead? What it I counted it a privilege and honor to serve every single day?

You can wake up and ask, “How can I get my needs met today?” or you can ask, “Who needs a blessing today? Who can I serve today?”

Guess which question leads to joy and happiness? Guess which question gives you lasting peace and purpose? Jesus talks about who is “great” among us. It’s the servant. It’s the “slave.”

Just as Jesus came to serve (even though he is the Lord of the Universe and deserves to be served), we are here to serve.

Who can you serve today?
