Who Am I?

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10

Max Lucado’s book, A Hat for Ivan, shares the story of a hat maker and his son. Ivan’s father creates hats for each person in their town, and each hat displays the colors and symbols of “who” that person is. By looking at a person’s hat, you would know what makes them unique and special, what they like, and what they are good at doing. Ivan is about to receive his first hat. He isn’t sure what his hat should look like, and he takes the advice of everyone in town by trying to “fit” into their hats, longing for an identity. For some reason or another, each hat does not fit Ivan. He is discouraged and overwhelmed by this task. His father decides to make Ivan his own hat, giving him permission to be his own person, and this comes at the perfect time for Ivan.

God gives us the same permission to be our own person, explore our thoughts and ideas, and embrace the challenges we face with confidence. God created us in His own image for a purpose, to do something good with our lives. He has made a plan for our lives and wants to share it with us. If we can accept the fact that we were created by God, for good, then hopefully we can take the steps towards asking God for His guidance and direction. I don’t know about you, but I have learned in my life that my Father’s “hat” is always much more beautiful, exciting, and the perfect fit for me than any hat I design or try to fit into.

“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.” e.e. cummings

Take away: Accept that God’s plan for you is the perfect fit. He made you and designed a life that fits you. Wait on His plan and ask for His guidance.
