Disaster

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” Psalm 18:16-19

Does life ever feel like it’s falling apart for you? Are you in the middle of a personal disaster? That felt like most days for me in high school. My family life wasn’t great. My grades in trigonometry were terrible. The boy I wanted to ask me to the dance asked my best friend instead. Some days, it felt like life was unraveling. I felt so unsteady inside, and I didn’t know who to talk to.

Imagine being in the midst of deep whirlpool. You’re whipped around and you can’t get your bearings. You’re scared, angry, and confused. Then imagine the great hand of God reaching down and plucking you out of that disaster. Imagine being delivered to dry land—maybe some beautiful tropical resort. It’s peaceful and safe.

Will you let yourself be rescued? Will you let yourself be brought to a spacious place and enjoy the Lord’s delight in you?

Make a list of all the things that feel like a “disaster” or “deep waters” for you today. Ask God to reach down and take hold of you.
