“Do not be anxious about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
What should we do when we feel worried? The Bible says clearly, “Don’t worry,” but how do we stop the uneasy feeling from creeping into our thoughts? For some of us, it feels almost impossible to keep our minds from being uneasy about our circumstances.
Philippians 4 says “do not be anxious about anything.” Great, so now we can worry that we can’t stop worrying!
But wait, perhaps we should put the emphasis on another part of these verses. Reading on it says, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” If we can choose to press pause on our worry long enough to remember who God is, thanking him for being our loving and caring God, our worry sometimes feels less powerful.
By reminding ourselves of God’s reign over all things, we remember his power and his detailed care for every part of our lives. We can talk to ourselves and tell ourselves that God made us, loves us, and is pleased with who we are.
Knowing with our heads that we are loved deeply can change our hearts and give us perspective. God always wants what’s best for his children, and he longs for us to pause and rest in his loving care.
Although we can tell ourselves these truths and pray that the Lord would give us his peace, we may still worry at times. Even in the midst of worry, the Bible assures us that God loves us and is in the business of making all things new.
We will not always worry- in eternity we will be with the Father, understanding more fully the love and delight he has had for us since the beginning of time.
