A Lamp to Our Feet

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

Do you ever feel a little bit lost? Or maybe you’re unsure of how to make a certain decision, what to do with your life, who to hang out with, where to go for help, how to get through something difficult. Are you, at times, confused or frustrated or even despairing? If you’re like me, you might sometimes wonder in those difficult moments, “God, could you just speak up and tell me what to do?”

I have been frustrated by the seeming silence of God at different times in my life. I think of when I was in college especially — when I didn’t know what to major in at the beginning and didn’t know what jobs to look into at the end. I felt really lost.

A friend of mine shared this verse from Psalm 119 with me: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” They helped me to see that God actually is not silent after all. He has spoken in His Word, the Bible. God doesn’t always give us the whole picture in the Bible — or answers to every one of our questions. But He gives us what we need to just keep walking.

His word is a “lamp to our feet.” Imagine walking through the woods in the middle of the night and all you have is a small flashlight or lantern. You can’t see the whole path. You can’t see all the trees coming around the corner or the hill on the other side of the stream. No, you only see a few steps. But that’s all you need to just keep walking!

God’s Word works that way in our lives. We don’t always get all the answers for our every question. But we have enough. We know who God is: that He is Creator and Loving and Holy and our Father. We know that He made us in His image to know Him. We know that He sent His Son Jesus Christ into this world to live for us and to die for us and to rise from the dead for us too! And we know that He is at work building His Church and advancing His Kingdom until one day He makes all things new.

We don’t know everything, but we know enough to just keep walking. We have a light for the darkness, a lamp for the journey. Let’s open His word to learn what steps we can take next!
