The First Thing the Bible Says About You

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

You remember when you were really little and you would go to your crazy Aunt’s house for Thanksgiving and she and your uncle would banter back and forth about whether you looked more like your mom or your dad? Pretty awkward, right? Well, as you get older and maybe have children of your own, chances are you’ll do the same thing. You will probably gaze at them, astounded at how their eyes look just like their father’s, or how the shape of their mouth is exactly like yours.

Do you know the first thing the Bible has to say about you? It says that you are created in the image of God. Now, you might read that and sort of yawn, mainly because you don’t really know what it means. Does that mean your nose looks like God’s? Not exactly.

Think about it this way: back when much of the Bible was written (and this is still true in parts of the Middle East), kings, wanting to remind everyone that they were the ruler of a specific territory, would put up images of themselves (statues or even paintings) all over the place. People would walk down the road and see a statue of King So-and-So and would be reminded, “Oh yeah, this is his territory, and I live in his land, and he is my ruler.” Ok, now hold that picture in your head for a second.

When God created the world, he made fish and sheep and trees and flowers and said, “This is good!” Then, He made man and woman, and the Bible specifically says that they were the only creatures made in the image of God. So, what’s the point?

Well, God placed little pictures of Himself throughout all of His creation, and those little pictures are you! Why is that important? Because it tells you something about why you are here and what your purpose is. And what is that purpose, you ask? To reflect the glory and the greatness of the King of all creation!

That means you are incredibly important and valuable…YOU are made in the image of God! No matter what shape or size, whether you are blond or brunette, short or tall, funny or kind of serious, each of you is made to reflect the glory of God in this world. This is the truth that you need to speak into your mind and heart today!

So, think about that today as you go to school, or play soccer, or sit down to draw. Think about how what you are doing uniquely can reflect the good and loving God who created you. Think about how the things you do and say can be like little signposts throughout the creations that say, “This is God’s world! He is King over all and we will give Him the glory!”
