When You Feel Far from God

“The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14

Sometimes we wake up in the morning, and we just feel this disconnect between us and God. Sometimes we wake up knowing and expecting that distance, remembering each barrier we have built to keep it that way. And then sometimes we don’t even realize where we are.

For those moments when you feel far from God - don’t run away. Don’t lay down and become apathetic. Don’t doubt who He says He is. Press in. Fight back against the resistance. Push through the sludge of sin and apathy and anger, and press in.

If I could scream it at you I would. I would hold your face, cupped between my hands, look you in the eyes and encourage you to press in.

What I mean by this is simple. Bring your mess to God. The stuff you are dying to hold against him, what you are storing up in your back pocket as amo for that time when you need to tell God, “I told you so.”

Two facts about that:

  1. It’s never going to reach that, I-told-you-so moment
  2. You are not gaining any freedom by doing this.

So here is my advice: tell him where you are and how you feel. And after that, loosen up your deathly grip of control. He will fight for you. You only need to be still.
