“This is why it is said, ‘Wake up sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Ephesians 5:14
I love Needtobreathe. Hearing their music always brings my heart back to skipping into Morning Assembly and dancing like a fool with my camp friends.
They have one song in particular called “Slumber” that I couldn’t stop listening to when it came out - in fact, I loved it so much that I decided to set it as my alarm to wake me up in the morning. I woke up to that intro at 6am… every day… over and over… do you know where this is going?
I eventually reached a point where if I ever heard the song, even in the afternoon or evening, something in my brain would go off and give me that awful feeling of getting up in the wee hours of the morning. Needless to say, I didn’t listen to it for quite some time.
Why is it so hard for us to wake up in the morning? Let’s be honest, we all love our beds – the warmth, the comfort – but what makes it so difficult for us to get up and get moving with our days?
I think for me, it’s often fear that leaves me wanting to stay under the covers. Fear of defeat, fear of what people might say or do, fear of bad things happening… but then I listen to that Needtobreathe song again, where the lyrics say, “Glory’s waiting outside your window. Wake on up from your slumber, baby open up your eyes.”
Will there be days when we might fall short? Yes. Will people hurt us or fail us? Of course. But will God’s glory, which is present in this world every single day, overcome those things and give us a reason to get up and live for him? Absolutely.
