Find Stillness and Peace

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

At times, it seems impossible to find stillness in our world today. We zip from activity to activity, work on endless piles of homework, study for test after test, and try to fit in everything else we have going on in the wee bit of time we have left over. If we don’t make the time to plug into God and abide in His peace every now and again, we can become anxious, unsettled, exhausted, and completely overwhelmed.

But God says, “Be still and know that I am God,” and in John, 14:27, “I leave you peace; my peace I give to you.” God wants us to know His peace.

Are there things in your life that are contributing to a lack of peace and stillness? Are there certain things (like Facebook or Instagram, for example) that you might refrain from for a while, in order to more effectively plug into God?

Here are a few of my favorite ways to find stillness:

  • Sit outside in nature and breathe deeply, thinking about simple things for which I’m grateful
  • Make myself a cup of tea or coffee and read the Bible or write in my journal in the morning
  • Sit, eyes closed, in sunlight, and just listen to what God is saying to me
  • Flip open the Bible, find a verse that sticks out, and meditate on it for a few moments while sitting on the floor
  • Designate certain days as “Technology-free Days,” and whenever I’m about to check Instagram or Facebook, say a prayer asking me to plug into God and be mindful of His presence instead

Practice: Is there an area in your life where you’re desiring stillness? Give your heart to God. Ask Him to make it still.

Prayer: God, make my heart still. Let me be filled with your peace. In this busy world, help me to take a few minutes every day to plug into You and find solace in your stillness and truth. Amen.
