“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Ephesians 4:4-6
A friend recently asked me to grab her lunch when I was going to get mine. She said, “Just get me a chicken salad.” Little did she know how difficult that task might be.
The place I was going to was one of those make-your-own-salad places, where the possibilities are endless. I had to try and figure out does she wanted spicy chicken, grilled chicken, breaded chicken, or chicken salad? Red peppers, sweet peppers, bell peppers, and/or avocado. I didn’t know if she was allergic to nuts or broke out in hives when she ate strawberries. I mean you might be rolling your eyes, but one day you will experience the same panic that I felt when deciding between honey ranch and spicy ranch dressing.
There were too many choices, and I had no idea where to begin.
Some people like to compare salads to life. I am one of those people. Sometimes, it feels like there are too many choices in life. Which high school should I go to? Should I play soccer or be in the play? What instrument should I play? Should I do my homework or watch that TV show? Should I go to camp or do a summer school program? To answer that last question, the answer is always camp.
With so many choices, we can easily become overwhelmed, or even paralyzed, and unable to make any decision at all. However, God gives us peace because in every choice, he is over all, through all, and in all.
There is just one Lord, and He not only gave us these choices in life, but He resides over all of our choices. While there are so many options to choose from in the world, we can rest in the fact that God is present in our choices and Psalms 32:8 says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
Whatever is on your mind, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of many options and decisions, meditate on the One that is consistent through all of it.
